Turned Flow
An EngineersToolbox Calculation Module

Summary

This module is used to compute the force generated due to turning of fluid in a short duct.

Background Information

This module calculates the force acting on a short duct due to fluid turning and expansion/contraction. The duct is depicted in Figure 1.

Figure 1: Force on duct due to flow turning.

The x- and y-forces are computed using equations (1) and (2) below,

(1)

(2)

where m is mass flow rate, V1 is velocity at inflow, V2 is velocity at outflow, A1 is inflow area of duct and A2 is outflow area of duct and t is turning angle.

Input

The inputs for this module are depicted in Figure 2. The inputs consist of duct geometric dimensions, fluid flow properties, flow rate and pressure.

Figure 2: ETBX inputs for Turned Flow module.

Results

The results are displayed using standard ETBX output window shown in Figure 3. The output consists of force in x and y direction.
